A culture of corruption

Democratic Congressman William Jefferson of Louisiana was indicted by a grand jury this past week on a laundry list of charges.  Included, were charges of bribery, money laundering and obstruction of justice.  He could face more than 200 years in prison, although unlikely.

As you may remember, Jefferson allegedly stashed $90,000 in his freezer making it cold, hard cash.   This was more than a rainy-day fund, this was part of the $100,000 paid to Jefferson by an FBI informant.  Jefferson was videotaped taking the funds.  The electorate in Jefferson’s congressional district voted to send Jefferson back to congress last November, despite the evidence.  Apparently, taking $100,000 on videotape from an FBI informant is not a disqualifier in congressman Jefferson’s congressional district in Louisiana.

The receptionist for Democratic Washington D.C. councilman Marion Barry is being held after plowing through a crowd of people at a religious street festival.  Forty people were injured.  Tests found that the receptionist, Tonya Bell, was high on crack cocaine.  Interesting that she should work for Marion Barry.  Those darn FBI videotapes are everywhere.

Clinton White House National Security Advisor,  Sandy Berger just surrendered his license to practice law and was disbarred from the D.C. bar.  Stealing classified documents from the National Archives can have negative repercussions.  Going to jail is not one of them though.

Illinois Democratic fundraiser, Antoin ‘Tony’ Rezko pleaded not-guilty to political kickbacks and swindling investors.  He is the same Tony Rezko who recommended an intern to his friend Barack Obama, who later hired the intern to work in his Capital Hill office.  Obama also paid Rezko and his wife more than $104,000 in a land deal to purchase property that the Rezko’s conveniently bought next door to their friends, the Obamas.  So, this is just one of Mr. Obama’s ‘friends.’

In April, a jury was selected for the trail of John Ford, a Democratic lawmaker in Tennessee, who was videotaped taking bribes in an FBI sting.  Ford had been a Democratic lawmaker in Memphis for 31 years.  He is accused of accepting $55,000 in bribes to fix state contracts in favor of a company he thought was in the computer recycling business.  Those pesky FBI stings do it every time.

In March, Democratic New Jersey state senator, Wayne Bryant was indicted for mail fraud, wire fraud and bribery.  Bryant apparently was able to triple his state pension through psuedo-jobs that he set up to funnel monies to himself for imaginary work.  One such ‘job’ was with a state medical school.  The senator returned the favor to the school by bringing $12.8 million of NJ state money their way.

If one goes back in history, one additional month, you will find another Democrat calling 2007, the year of his indictment.  In this case; his third.  Pennsylvania state senator, Vincent Fumo was indicted on 139 counts of defrauding the state out of more than $1 million.   Fumo’s suspicious non-profit organization apparently provided a lot of profit for the 63 year old Democrat, who has spent 30 years in the state senate.

In recent years, the Democratic playbook has included talking points designed to convince Americans that the Republican Party is mired in corruption.  The phrase that Democrats incorporated into their public pronouncements was a Republican ‘culture of corruption.’  As evidence of this, they point to Scooter Libby, charged with lying to a grand jury.   They also point to the political witch-hunt in Texas where charges had been brought against Republican, Tom Delay.

What the press sweeps under the rug though is the ongoing evidence of true corruption in the Democratic Party.  Unlike Scooter Libby, who apparently had lapses in memory, getting dates mixed up, many prominent Democrats were caught red handed, intentionally sticking their hands in the cookie jar.  There are varying degrees of crime, and the real criminal intent seems to be on the side of the Democrats.  Whether or not the public hears about the culture of corruption amongst the Dems is another story.

Last November, the perception created by the Democrats was successful enough to give them power in Washington.  Most members of the public were duped into believing that all political corruption resided in the Republican Party.  What the public is largly unaware of is the ongoing criminal enterprise that exists in the Democratic Party.  Because most of these crimes are under-reported, the perception continues to exist that Republicans are more corrupt.  The facts speak otherwise.
