While many would accurately describe Dick Cheney as a powerful person, who has known what it is to be at the top in government and corporate American, it was a contrite, humble Dick Cheney who spoke today. It was a very human Dick Cheney who described a mistake he regretted in a painful, sincere voice. Today, we did not hear the Vice President of the United States, we did not hear the former CEO of a major international company, we heard the uncomfortable voice of concern of a person who accidentally shot a friend who he has great respect for. We heard from someone who has grave concerns about the health and well being of someone he enjoys spending time with.
Vice President Cheney described the events of last Saturday in a tone that showed his continued remorse, and most certainly, an accurate accounting. While the Vice President has been maligned in the past, and accused of making millions from his corporate connections, all accusations have been proven false. Most who know him, know he is the consummate public servant, who believes in doing what is right. He has been vilified and demonized, much like the rest of the administration he works within. Throughout the long, close marriage he has had with his wife Lynn, he has always shown himself to be an honorable man.
Why then a witch-hunt? Why do those on the extreme left want to crucify this man for a mistake he is obviously sorry for? What ever happened to the image of the compassionate democrat? Amongst those who are the voice of the party, compassion is not found anywhere.Â
Two older gentlemen go out hunting. They are there to do something they prize and to enjoy each others company.  One makes a mistake that is an unfortunate consequence of hunting, and does happen occasionally.  In the process, the Vice President realizes that an accurate accounting of the incident is of enormous importance. He knows that the Washington press corps will not seek that accurate accounting, so the only other eye witness reports the facts to the local newspaper, and the story then goes out on the wire.
This is what happened. There was no intentional cover up. The Vice President’s only concern now is the health and well being of his friend. His concern is with Mr. Wittington and his family. End of story.Â
There is a feeding frenzy going on. Like a pack of wolves attacking some hapless deer, the most extreme members of the democratic party are foaming at the mouth over the unintentional accident involving the Vice President. We already know that these opportunists have no scruples, but the depths of their depravity are apparently deeper than any of us can imagine.
Take Harry Reid (or should I say, “take Harry Reid please?â€). Here is his astute observation regarding the unfortunate hunting accident that the Vice President was involved in; “Talk about secrecy, the vice president accidentally shoots someone and keeps that a secret for nearly a day. That man, of course, is now very sick.” May I make an observation Mr. Reid? I don’t mean to live in the past, but wasn’t it six months after Mr. Clinton’s tryst with Ms. Lewinsky, before the Clinton Administration came clean? I know Americans have short memories, but Mr. Reid knows full well that this is just another opportunity for the left to create the image of a scandal, and that is what he is attempting to do. Mr. Reid complained also that the Bush Administration was unreasonably secretive, implying cover-ups and scandals again. No, Mr. Reid, it’s called national security. We had not been attacked on our own soil by terrorists during past administrations. We are at war Mr. Reid.
I have already heard numerous liberals, in person, snickering about the Vice Presidents accidental shooting of his longtime friend, Harry Whittington. Most of these same people know nothing of the actual details of what happened, and most have never spent time out in the woods hunting. If they knew anything about hunting, they would know that this type of unfortunate accident happens frequently around the country. They would also understand that Mr. Whittington reentered the location where the hunting party stood, approaching in the line of fire.  The Vice President had no idea that his friend was returning through the brush in the same location where a group of quail had just taken flight. It was an accident, pure and simple.  The Bush haters that I had to listen too berated the VP with comments that exhibited only single minded loathing, and no interest in the facts.
We have already seen the same who’s who of the extreme left regurgitate their same laundry list of accusations and demands. Chuck Schumer of N.Y. joined Reid and Kennedy in the same ad nausea chorus that they have come to be known for. What we really need to hear from them is how they would lead the country if they were the majority party, and what their alternate and better plan is. The truth is though, that they have no better plan, so they do an end runaround, and cook up visions of scandals in the current administration to deflect this truth.Â
Now that Mr. Whittington has had one of the bb’s enter his bloodstream, count on liberals to further foam at the mouth anticipating complications, and cheerful visions of the attorney’s death. Yes it sounds morbid, but this is a hate-fest folks, and the haters are in a frenzy.
